The NBA returned to the spotlight in the midst of its offseason on Tuesday when a picture that included the world’s three best small forwards — LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Kawhi Leonard — standing together in hoop gear blew up the internet.
The picture first was posted on Tuesday afternoon on the verified Instagram account of another NBA small forward, the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Cedi Osman, who is also in the picture that received more than 110,000 likes. Osman is still close to his former Cavs teammate James.
James, Durant and Leonard worked out together for the first time on Tuesday at UCLA after trying to make it happen for a while, sources told The Undefeated. It is uncertain whether another private basketball workout with James, Durant and Leonard will happen anytime soon.
Others in the picture included three members of the Toronto Raptors’ basketball staff in Phil Handy, John Corbacio and recently hired Jeremy Castleberry, a close friend and former high school, college and AAU teammate of Leonard’s. Durant, who has won two straight NBA Finals MVP awards with the Golden State Warriors, was also joined in the picture by his trainer, Randy Williams. Handy declined to give details of the workout but gave The Undefeated permission to use the picture.
Under Handy’s Instagram post on “thereal94feetofthegame,” Durant said: “Steel sharpens steel.”
Osman posted on his Instagram: “Never stop dreaming, never stop believing, never give up, never stop trying and never stop learning!”
James signed a four-year, $150 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers in July. The Raptors acquired Leonard in a trade from the San Antonio Spurs last month after he missed most of last season because of injury and was disgruntled with the franchise. Leonard is a Los Angeles native who has previously been reported to be interested in signing with the Lakers or Los Angeles Clippers and will be a free agent next summer. James and Durant have spent time together in Los Angeles this offseason.
